The Broadfleet 2008 Show Season

We've had yet another show success at our first show of the season at Lincoln..!

In keeping with last years show season we have decided that we will only be showing our Southdown sheep this show season leaving our Tamworth pigs to laze about in their pens in this great British summer of ours..!  The reason is that we have nothing to show!  We have no gilts as they were all sold as weaners, the sows are with their litters of piglets or not pregnant and our resident boar is hard at work...!!

Again we entered our sheep into the Lincoln show.  This time we had a shearling ram (just over a year old ie he's been sheared), two shearling ewes and two ram lambs.  We had them sheared a little late this year so they only had six weeks of wool on them.  However they still had a bath a week before the show but it did make it easier on trimming day as all they needed was carding and not shaping except of course for the ram lambs.

On the Tuesday before the show we set off with them in the trailer leaving them at the show ground at around 5pm ready for the show the next day.

The following day we were up nice and early down to the showground adding the finishing touches to our sheep.  Due to blue tongue, entries were down but in our class there was still a lot of entries.  We were first up with our shearling ram...

He finished fourth and seeing as we had high hopes for him we were a little disappointed.. Oh well on with the ram lambs...

They finished sixth and second... Things were certainly getting better although we had a little wait until our two shearling ewes were due in the ring...

In they went with the judge going through his usual routine of checking the teeth, condition of the sheep and how they walked...  Unbelievably the shearling ewe Carolyn was showing came first.  the judge was very complimentary which now meant that she would go on into the championship class...

A short while later she again entered the ring and again won making her the female champion in her class.  She was now against the champion male in her class but unfortunately finished as reserve supreme champion...

I think it would be fair to say that we were absolutely dumbfounded.  Not in a million years did we think that she would do so well.  We were absolutely overjoyed with the result...  So now it's on to Heckington and to hopefully repeat the success of two years ago and our success at Lincoln....
