Our resident Embden gander - who can be a little bit of a handful - has become the subject of a poem from one of our visitors.
So, to add a little culture to this web site, the poem is reproduced here with his kind permission....
His breath on freezing fingers blew.
He grabbed the old gnarled cherry crook.
The gander rose, towards him flew,
Then stopped and proud white feathers shook.
He reached the pond and struck the ice,
Geese, ducks and hens all gathered round.
One, two, four blows did then suffice,
And water splashed on frozen ground.
Loud honks and clucks pierced icy air,
Birds squabbled for the liquid gold.
But he moved on to tread with care,
Towards the bleating sheep in fold.
His task now done, he reached the gate,
Then turned and leaned towards the scene.
He mused how tricks played out by fate,
Had brought him to this spot to lean.
These birds, these beasts were in his charge,
But who held him on moving strings?
And was there someone else at large
To feed and nurture greater beings?
The painful cold seeped to his brain,
He scanned the view from whitened gate.
Maybe life’s secret sought in vain,
Was glistening there in frozen state.
